    Exclamation VR6 Timing chain noise

    Hi there ..

My bora has been making noise which was diagnosed as timing chain noise .. which you can hear loud and clear when the car idles.

the noise started recently after i installed a new oil sump and used thinner oil Liqui-Moly 5w30 instead of what i was putting in it (10w40) .. prior to that .. i had no noise coming from there ..

    any input regarding that ?

also .. is there any way of tensioning the chain without taking the motor out ?

the motor has 118000 km's on it .. and is in very good condition ..

    cheers,
    Sam

You can replace the tensioner easily enough. And should be able to get a fair bit more from your chains. Unless they are to far gone. (Highly doubt this though)

My chains were never really heard other than at start up.

Don't put it off.Had a V5 destroy itself with only 60k whilst idling in the shop trying to find a noise.

would me reverting back to thicker oil possibly help ?

and would replacing the tensioner involve taking the engine out ? how pricey would it be ?

From my understanding of how the chains are lubricated. It shouldn't necessarily matter when hot what weight oil is used. Only at start up(as thin as possible) so that the oil can quickly make its way to the chains.

For the cost you can get oil. It wouldn't be to bad to try it and see what happens.

Pretty sure 12v to 24v the tensioners are roughly the same. And you don't need to drop the box or engine. Should only take an hour.

I reverted back to a thicker oil .. the noise is still there with no changes ..

Since I had the car up .. I decided to get under it while it was running .. to track the noise ..

Found out it was coming from the lower part of the engine .. on the right side of the oil pan .. which means .. yes it is the chains ..
Does that mean that the chain will have to be done and not just the tensioners ?
Eninge has to come out ?

It means you need to do the job properly.
Gearbox out as a minimum and replace all guides/tensioners. Would be silly to not do the chains as well. The parts arent that expensive its the labour as its a big job.
If you cheap out it could end up costing you thousands more later when something goes wrong.
