Sounds good mate, so what exactly was involved in Step 5 ? Is it follow the prompts type stuff or inserting specific code?

So the VAG-Com cable and the VAG-Tacho are definitely different?

I bought a cheap VAG-Com cable and got that working with 409-1 ok... Doesnt seem to work with 908

D/L'd Vag-Tacho 2.5 but can't get anything info to display

Vag Tacho cable is different to VagCom cable. I tried the same, dl'ed the software with no luck, so I ended up buying both cables.

AFAIK the 409.1 is the newest version of VAG-COM that works with cheap cables.

I purchased one of these cables (Vag Tacho) and after 2.5wks, the seller emailed me back to say they cannot get them anymore and that they would refund my money (which they did).

I then purchased the vag tacho 2.5 from ebay for $35.00.
Arrived promptly and worked a treat.

So, no more Vag Tacho Cables from this mob.

    Cheers

Thanks for the responses... is this correct?

myself and a mate who has an Audi TT have been trying to get this to work on my R32 and his TT and on two laptops, (one is Lenovo with Vista, the other an eeePc with XP). We both work in IT and have plenty of experience with COM ports both serial and USB.

We are able to get what we see is a successful connection, yet we are unable to access any of the controllers. We have tried different drivers, different versions of the SW, changing the baud rate but to no avail. All we end up getting is an error: unable to access controller

The problem is that you are trying to use licensed software without certified hardware.
VAG-COM uses a coded chip in the cable to authorise it's use.

That said... there are ways around it. Just do some searching.

I will keep you posted... My mate has a laptop at home with the software installed from 4 years ago which he is adamant does work without having done anymore than what we already have...

I guess it is possible that the software has been altered during these 4 years though
