V5 oil pump gone? noisy lifters

hi all,
just picked up a 2000 v5 bora its the 150ps 10 valve,

and the lifters are making noise at idle , but when in gets going they quieten down until im at the lights again etc,

now i checked the oil and its immaculate so could the oil pump have blown? which would explain the dry lifters and clean oil in the sump?

i know my way around a VW , if i get pointed in the right way ahaha so if theres anything i can check?

If you are suspect of the oil pump I would drop the pan and suss it out ASAP. You should be able to freely rotate the pump by hand and check the relief valve is not too weak. My oil pump failed and took a connecting rod and the crank with it, not a fun job.

It may just be your lifters.
Do you know the service history?
Could be a blockage as well, maybe do a service with an engine flush and use a genuine oil filter.
You say that they go quiet so something is working.
Start the car and let it run for a few minutes, open the oil cap and see if its dry or you can see any oil in there.
How many kms on your car.
Not normal anyway, our Bora V5 is very quiet.

Probably a blocked oil pickup in the sump. Run an engine flush with the old oil, or a litre of diesel.
Then take the sump off. I bet the pickup is blocked with sludge. Indicates skipped oil changes.
Thats more common than a rooted pump.

cheers guys, is the sump easy enough to remove? like shall i run engine flush then drain oil then remove sump? is it just 10mm hex or torx?

The oil pumps on the VR5/VR6 V6 engines are prone to failing . The main reason is the spring that controls the oil pressure over time gets weaker and allows excess oil pressure into the galleries . You can actually remove the pump and seperate it to check the plunger that the spring controls . You can even tighten the spring if your clever , but unless you know the gap between the plunger and the base its a bit of a risk , your better off just getting a new pump . Putting diesel into the oil system isnt the best idea to clean sludge when removing the sump isnt so hard . Also dont forget to pull the timing chain tensioner out and make sure the spring can retract easily . Thats the most common reason for chains/guides to fail .
