    Underbody damage to fueltank

    Hi All,

this weekend I drove into an uneven driveway and knocked a small protruding rock on the way in, heard a bit of a thud, checked it and as far as I could see, it looked like the centre exhaust resonator took the hit (no major damage). But today I went to fill up as the Low Fuel light came on and to my surprise it only took 42L to fill to right to the top, then when I jumped in the Fuel Gauge was only showing 7/8ths full.

Intuition tells me something is not right, and logic would say that the Fuel tank sender took a hit. Can anybody disprove this theory and confirm the location of the fuel sender on the Boras.

I hope to get it checked out this week, but as there are no leaks, I am not overly concerned......yet.

    To Be Continued......

The level sender and pump are in the same unit.

I'd take the pump out and have a look into the tank, the bottom could be pushed in a bit. Knock it out if it is and that'll probably fix it.

Thanks Gavin, I'm planning a better inspection tomorrow.

No worries, Pump is held in on a bayonet. Standard lefty loosey. Needs a bit of manipulation to get out the hole.

    Hi Gavin (and Goodfella)

I am imagining the fuel tank has to be nearly empty to take out and inspect the pump/sender unit?

I ask because I have now done 350kms since my last fuel fill and my gauge is still on about 90% full. Sounds like a sender unit to me rather than a blwon fuse cause the fuel gauge is the only gauge not working.

If its like the earlier golfs if u can do it anytime as u access it from the boot. Would prob be best though if u were low on fuel as u dont want to sniff too much of it!

You can take the pump/sender out with a fair bit of fuel onboard. You might find the float has stuck somehow. Jimmy had this recently on a car that wouldn't start, showed over a 1/4 tank but actually had none at all.
The sender isn't fixed to the bottom of the tank, just needs a bit of wobbling to get out the tank. Disconnect the 2 pipes off the top. Prep yourself up and get some new clips as you'll most likely have to bust the OE ones to get the pipes off. They are those ones you crimp on both sides..
