Im no expert .. but could it be a bad gear selector ?
hi everyone!
turns out I have broken my sister's car. She let me borrow it.
I drove it 10kms. Parked it for a couple of hours, reversed out and drove back another 10kms.
Now she has gone to drive it and cannot get the reverse gear. This was the first time i have driven her car so I have done something wrong but it just seemed like it was driving normal to me. My car is quite a bit older (and ****ter) so I'm not actually familiar with such a modern car (what a loser, right? I know).
Needless to say, I feel absolutely mortified and will be getting it fixed but wanted to see if anyone has any idea of what the issue may be?? Is it something common?
I don't know all the details but the car is a 2000 golf (which I'm pretty sure makes it mk4). It is a 5spd gearbox and not a turbo or diesel model.
The gear stick now just feels kinda loose even in gear.
if anyone has any insights or suggestions, I'm all ears.
thanks

Did you push the stick down to get reverse?
MK4 GTI - Sold
MK5 Jetta Turbo - Sold
MK5 Jetta 2.Slow - Until it dies.
haha. yes.
my sister has had the car for a little while so she does know how to get reverse.
the stick goes down and across to the position that is where reverse would normally be but then when releasing the clutch it starts moving forward.
Sounds like the selector end has somehow got itself out of the selector fork slots and so is not really doing anything.
The only thing is to get the gear selector out and see what has to be done to realign things.
Unless you know what to do, it will be a trip to the mechanic. It may just be that the gate was missed and the selector end is in no man's land.
