gerhard..your Mk V is programmed totally different than a Mk IV in relation to the seatbelt chime...Mk IV only has a basic softcode and a hardwired buckle.
None of that Euro NCAP speed related warning stuff works on the mk iV....I have tried all the different country codes and recoding to see what effect they had...absolutely none, except the symbol in the speedo was disabled...the gong just keeps sounding when you first start car.
On the Mk IV there is a wire going into Pin 31 on the 32 pin blue plug on back of cluster.
Basically if Pin 31 grounds when you turn on ignition then warning gongs sound for 6 seconds.
So the buckle itself has a normally closed switch inside it. When you insert the buckle it breaks the contact to ground....so no gongs.
Thats how the Mk IV works.

So I always thought the 6 chimes at startup were something to do with system checks etc. Today for the first time I put the seatbelt on before starting the car - no chimes. I learned something new. The Mrs was like 'derr I knew that'

Agree, thats why you just reach under the seat and unplug it. Too easy!I'm with Rykby, it is unnecessary and annoying......
Adam, you yourself suspected this in the 6th post.
I'm amazed that it took so many more posts to get to this very simple solution.

Fair enough. Your looking for the smaller black plug (has 2 wires).Do you know which plug it is and where it is on a MKIV? I have only seen the thread on the Tiguan so it is likely to be different. My concern is making sure I don't disrupt the seat airbag.
The airbag plugs are bigger and bright yellow.
Cheers!

DONE IT!!! No more stupid chiming when I start the car!! It's the little things that make me happy.
Really easy to do, you need to look under the seat just behind the lever for sliding it back and forward, it helps to lift the lever up to see it too, and you will need a torch. Right there closest to you is a little black plug with two wires into it (as Speed said), just unplug it.

and in the T5 under the drives seat there is a small connector with a brown and brown/white set of wires, simply unplug them and the car thinks you have your seatbelt on. no more annoying chimes at startup when your trying to reverse out of the driveway with the bloody parking sensors going mad too
