On another note, I discovered today that I've got no reverse lights. Checked bulbs, checked fuse and all is good so it looks like that it's the old reverse switch on the gearbox. Having a bit of a search on the interweb it seems that this is a pretty common fault on the MkIVs and it's either going to be the switch itself or the wiring to the switch.
Will investigate further tomorrow as of course the switch is located under the battery and if I pull the battery out I can't test the damn switch. Splash guard and maybe front bar are going to have to come off.

    Cheers,
    Trent
Glad you posted this i have the same problem racking my head whats wrong so it must be the switch.

Note to self: Everything under the MkIV R32 bonnet is difficult to get to and a right ****er to do anything without at least some wheel ramps or jack stands and patience which I don't have.

Suffice to say my attempt at replacing the damn reverse light switch did not go well. In fact I have given up altogether and will get it done during the week when all my other goodies get installed. Due to the awesomeness of the engine and the six speed gearbox the switch is tucked up out of the way where it is difficult to get to and unfortunately I don't have a socket the right size to go over it and getting any kind of leverage with a shifting spanner (bad tool I know) from the weird angle I had to go up there is impossible. There's lots of hoses and some coolant lines or something which also get in the way and you can't get to it from the top without having to move a whole heap of wiring anyway.

I will attempt to let people know I'm reversing by putting on my rear fog light until I get this problem fixed.

On a more positive note I finally found something that VW Australia sell cheaper than what I can get it for overseas. The reverse switch (02K945415G) was only $28.75 from Highway VW parts and they even had one in stock. ECS and all the comments on Vortex indicate that the price in the US is about $20US. Happy times.

    Cheers,
    Trent

    Sigh...

Oh and it turns out that my R also likes to eat roads. Note the bits of road tucked up into the bottom of my dogbone mount.

Yeah it happens I guess. I've only done 24,000 of those kms in a year and a half and at an average of 20,000kms per year the kms are still below average. Mainly highway kms from the previous owner too.

Me too, new in Nov 03 and just clocked over 46K.

I figure I have to take it easy because the way I drive that 46K is more like 286K in normal kilometers.
