I need some help trying to convince dad to buy an R32.

    My side is:
    • R32's are cool
    • Cannot afford a MKV so the MKIV will do.
    • If the service history is good then there should be no major problems.
    • The car in question is an absolute bargain.

    His side is:
    • The car is already 6 years old.
    • He can buy a brand new lancer for the same price (ew), with 5 years warranty
    • He thinks it is going to cost too much to maintain with insurance and all that jazz.

Apart from those i'm pretty sure they are his only issues. I think the lancers are crap, if you have ever sat in one of the new lancers you'd know they are so tacky. Is it just me, or would other people rather a 6 year old R32 over a brand new lancer?.. I'd say in terms of build quality, a 6 year old R32 would last longer than a lancer. There is a reason they sell for $20,000 brand new.

The biggest one for me is depreciation.

Say you get the R32 for $25k today. It'll still be worth $25k tomorrow.

If you pay $20k for a Lancer today, it's worth ~20% ($4000!) less the second you start the engine to leave the dealership, and will depreciate to 20% of its original value after 5 years (if that high - the R32 is still worth close to 40% of its original value after 6 years, because it has way better than standard depreciation).

Get quotes on insurance for both cars. Find out what the scheduled servicing costs for both cars (and not necessarily dealer servicing - ask JMac on here what he charges for the services for instance. The best way to convince anyone of anything is to show them hard evidence, rather than just emotion.

Thanks for that mate, ill pitch that to him. I think his main issue is the R32 has no warranty, whereas the lancer has 5 years warrant. Ill see what i can do though haha, i really want this car!

In stop start city traffic it's about that. If i get decent stretches at 60-80 though it drops to just below 10.

Fuel consumption is terrible but thats not why i bought it (typically between 13-16L/100 around town, less on the highway 11-12L/100). Note: only mods are APR retune & headers on a MK5.

Extra power isn't free i guess (not just more air LOL).
