Track day tyre advice for a mk4 GTI

    Hi Guys,

Im planning on doing a speed off the streets day at wakefield.

This will be my first trackday and I want to learn the lines, and maybe in the last few runs, go for gold.

Just trying to get some pointers from people about car tyre setup.

Should I invest in some decent tyres for the track day? Or just wear out my current tyres?

    Im currently running..
Front - BCT S900's on the front (Some wang chung tyre)
Rear - Pirelli P7's (pretty much need replacement)

Will they let me run on my 'pretty much need replacement' rears?

Anyone recommend some tyres that are good value for money for trackdays?

I dont really want to waste the experience. Any advice would be great.

scrutineers will knock you back. you need to have road safe tyres. Brand etc doesnt matter, but its your track day. The better the tyre, the more you will get out of it.

if you dont do too much a to b driving and want to start doing more track days, look at kumho Ku36's. street legal semi slick.

I'd look at Federal 595RSR's. They are a great semi slick, road legal, and great in the wet too.

You might also want to check that your brake pads and brake fluid are in good order. Go to the Wakefield website and check what the requirements are with regards to the roadworthiness of your tyres. It is ok to learn on your road tyres first and then move on to semi slicks later on. Take it easy and have fun. There are a few other tyre brands like Yokohama (AD08, A04, Toyo R888, etc. Depends too on what your plans are for later (club sprints for example) You might then want to get a spare set of rims and dedicated track tyres.
    Have a safe track day.

Sigh these costs just continue lol...

Ok so im planning on moving the BCT S900's to the rear of the car, and then picking up some semi decent front tyres.

What do people take with them to the track to pump up their tyres? Or does wakefield have a public pump to utilise?

With the brakes... I have read that i should have my rotors machined before I put on the new pads... is this essential?

With the gearbox oil... Ive been told that its sealed for life... does that include track work? If not what do people recommend to change it over with?

    Thanks for this information.
