I've got the hayman reese bar on the back of my 1.6 too.
Had it done by the guys who fit it for a local VW dealer.
They take the whole bumper off, take off a steel bar (assuming it's for crash protection) and then the towbar bracket mounts to the place where the steel bar went. So behind the bumper there's a full width towbar mounting bracket. Plastic bumper goes back on (less the cutout in the valence for the tongue) and it should look pretty good.
Make sure they fit the bumper back on properly. When I had mine fitted, the bumper didn't sit properly so I made them refit the bumper on correctly.
Electricals should be pretty standard. Mine didn't require a canbus module and I don't think the GLE does either.
Towbars are very useful things even if you never tow anything. They are a very good protection from people who dont know how to use brakes properly. Because of a towbar i have a 10x10mm hole in my front bumper. Some idiot hit me from behind and pushed me into the car in front.
But i know what you mean about looks. I think it suits 4WDs more than cars, but as long as you can take the tongue off its all good

I have one on my V6 and I use it all the time, it is really handy. I will take a pic...
Dont know about protection as I often walk into it late at night HEHEH !
