    Throttle Body Alignment

    Hi All,

    I have a MK4 2.0L sport golf.

    Over the weekend I tried to install a pioneer headunit in place of the stock Eurovox VW unit.

    I disconnected the negative terminal on the battery. I did not do any soldering etc, I bought the pioneer to ISO harness and did a plug and play. I had to put the stock unit back on as I ran out of time as I had trouble getting out the metal bracket off which the eurovox left behind in the dash.

    So I put back in the stock player and then put negative terminal back on to the battery. Now when I start the car, it was idling very rough and also air cond not working as the fans doesn't spin below 2200rpm approx If I rev it past this the air cond fans and compressor kicks in no issues.

    So I went to a VW mechanic and he did a Throttle body alignment using VAGCOM. After this everything was fine again.

    So my question is the next time I try the headunit install again, is this issue going to happen again? Do I need to do a TBA everytime I disconnect negative terminal on battery????

    ok thanks. Hmm so if I disconnect my battery (-ve terminal) I would need to do a TBA. A bit of a pain as I don't have the VAGCOM cable. Need to visit the mechanic/dealer each time this happens I suppose.

    p.s. is a golf mk4 2.0L 2003 model a Drive by wire or cable throttle?

    Never owned one. Is there a cable from the throttle pedal to the throttle body. Or does the TB just have a wiring loom?

    I've always found after disconnecting and reconnecting the battery the TB alignment happens when I turn the key so the clocks etc light up but don't start the car. You should hear it resetting itself ... - mine is cabled.

    Ok thanks. How long did you leave the keyed turn for? Then after that period do you turn off car and start? It will be a pain to visit the mechanic each time I disconnect the battery to do a TBA via vagcom

    the only way to set these is via vagcom or odis. and your car is drive by wire. and yes it will need this done everytime the battery is disconnected.

    Ok thanks. So drive by wire. It's a 2003 mk4 2.0L

    So which mk4's had cable throttle?

    I just left it until the noise of the throttle body stopped. Mine is a 2001 model - I think some early GTIs were cabled as well as some 1.6 models. Later models changed to drive by wire and maybe it's different for them.

    It seems this is contentious as there are threads on Vortex etc that say you need the cable and VCDS ... then again, in the thread listed, people have claimed that they've had success using the method that others say doesn't work.

    VWVortex.com - any way to do throttle body adaptation without vag-com?

    (P.S. It seems like the chicken-dance, one leg bit is optional )
