Thinking of buying a 2002 Golf 1.6 s - Is this a good idea?

Need daily.
Already have an auto V5 Bora for family duties.
Noticed a 1.6 manual golf for sale locally that looks interesting.
Was looking for something that is good on petrol - but was wondering what peoples opinions on the 1.6 is?
Going to go and test drive this Saturday.

Don't buy a 1.6 manuel, the gearboxes are notorious for breaking. The 2.0 manuals are fine and so are the 1.6 autos iirc

2nd that, the 2.0L man (8V) is a great daily.

If you look around, there are some cheap mk5 TDI's too now... I just bought a 2.0 man for $6500 and my folks found a 1.9 man for $5000 - with leather!

i got a 1.6L with a 5 speed manual , they can be a bit gutless but its never given me any major dramas and i drive mine hard most of the time , only major problem i have had was my clutch was slipping badly and thats just bound to happen on any car ... there a great little car and great on fuel

If you go the 1.6 check the service history and perhaps budget for a new gearbox down the track as they are (as mentioned) notorious.

While its known that the 1.6 gearbox may fail there are thousands that still haven't.Like anything second hand you take a risk.

I'm about to put my fiancées 2003 Mk 4 Golf 1.6 up for sale. It hasn't missed a beat but then it's only done 90,XXXkm and has full service history including detailed receipts not just a stamped log book. Going to do the 90,000 km service on it first.

As long as they can do the 100/110km/h up the highway, everyone's happy.

My fiancées Golf is a manual FYI. It does the 100/110km/h trips easily. It's so much more solid than any Japanese equivalent but I'm preaching to the converted here.

It's not yet officially up for sale as it's due for its NSW rego renewal on 20th March. I was going to do the renewal, the 90,000km service and a full-day detail and then advertise it for $4,900.

However, if you don't need NSW registration I'd be happy to sell it for $4,000 following the 90,000km service and full detail. Otherwise without the service and detail, I'd sell it for $3,500.
