Thinking about buying a bora, any advice or do or donts?

    Hi Guys,

I am looking for a family car and the bora sprang to mind amoung others (audi a4, passat, 3 0r 5 series, subaru etc).

Can anyone tell me how reliable they are with say over 130k on th clock? Have they aged well, do they go wrong often? what things to look out for? are they worth buying at this age and what about the v64motion? Is that the model to buy?

Is it costly when they go wrong, like most german cars there....

    Thanks guys...

My Bora is currently for sale but its only a 2.0... I had it serviced on tuesday and had 4 new tires and new tie rods put in but apart from that the mechanic said it was in perfect condition. I love it and it has 149000 kays, but due to the service (which cost $1700) i have to sell it because i owe my parents money now http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/foru...tml#post712163 if you want to have a look. and where a bouts are you located?

Boras are excellent cars, and have aged very well, but most of them will require a bit of maintenance by now,as with ALL other cars of that age.

Agree with Anthony, there are some common issues with the car but you have to be smart about how you deal with them. For example, I had the Airbag control module go on my Bora, and after chatting to Volkspower they said call a dealership and get a new one ($1100 + fitting) or you can buy a second hand unit/reconditioned and replace it yourself. I took the latter, and it cost me $150. Too many people take dealerships/non VW Specialists word for what work needs to be performed and how, but there is so much information online you can reduce your costs massively!

If you are buying a V6 4Motion over 120,000, makes sure in the major service that Haldex service has been done, gearbox has had an oil change etc and you will be buying a good, solid car, but if there is no evidence of this then keep looking, Bora's, like ANY car MUST be taken car off on a regular basis. Other common issues are coil packs failing (can be fixed relatively cheaply), oxygen sensors and some other electrical pieces but speak to the right VW specialists and there are many tips and tricks along the way. I've had my Bora for 4 years and every time I get in the thing I drive with a massive smile on my face. Look after her and she will look after you .

PS, my 4Motion is for sale under classifieds, PM if you want to have a look/drive
