Thicker oil advice please

Car is MK4 golf 1.6L engine code AVU

My car is burning a small amount of oil on acceleration once warmed up and so smokes a bit I know it’s the valve stem seals but wont be able to replace them till at least December as way to busy at work to do the job and will do the timing belt water pump etc then.

I currently have 5w40 in there but it is using it up way too quickly. I put in an addative (basically thicker oil) which has helped a lot. Would using Castrol high milage 15w50 damage it as it might be too thick or will it be ok?

Try 10w-50 (penrite does one). You need the cold start "runny-ness"

5w40 is way to thin for that engine anyway so may not even be the valve stem oil seals, just that the oil your using is too thin for that engine even with low kilometers...i would go for a 10w40.. which is vw recomended .how many kilometers has the engine done out of interest

Thanks for the advice. The car has 166000 KM on it. I think I just used 2 thin an oil. Will do a change on the weekend. I dont have a genuine vw oil filter for the change. Is that ok or should I buy a genuine one.

I use a 10W40 semisynthetic in them. Seems to keep the oil consumption down.

Spend a little bit extra and go for the full synthetic 10w40..Its 15k service intervalson vw's and good quality full synthetic will not break down within this distance unlike a semi synthetic..vw502 vw504 vw spec is ideal for that Golf..
