you can get a stat for 30 bucks ( i went with a 75 degrees celcius ) which means it opens at the temp rather than the stock 89 degrees or what ever it is.
easy to change .
ever since i have had the car the cooling and heating has been weak, i was going to get the ac re gassed but if that is result of the thermostat having had it ill just replace that.
im going to book in for a scan monday so ill see how i go with it all and i shall keep you all posted.

Isn't it optimal to run at ~90 degrees celcius in the Golf?

Book it in for a scan??? Last week I rang up my mechanic with a blown coil pack - drove down in my lunch break, he scanned it, told me what cylinder it was and found out where one was in stock - all free!
If you know basically what the problem is and just need to know the error to pinpoint it, most reputable places will scan for free if you drop in....it only takes them 5 minutes
If we are talking about the thermostat on a 2.0 litre, its stat only at the front of the block next to the alternator. The 1.6 comes as the whole housing at the side of the head, its an electronic thermostat mainly on the AKL and BFQ engine, the 2.0 litre with APK has stat only
