Suspension replacement on my Golf 99 1.6L

    Hi all,

Just bought the car couple of days ago, and suspension really needs to be replaced. It feels really stiff when driving.

Any idea on how much are we looking at for replacing the whole front and rear suspension? Any 2nd hand parts available?

    Please give me your inputs...

Strange that you say stiff suspension is bad, mostly soft rubbery no feeling suspension is a bad sign.
But for a refresh many have opted for the ECS stage 2 refresh kits, it really transforms the front end.
Factor a bit over $200 landed and a few hundred to have it fitted.

I'd say the car will need shocks also, again, odd that you say it's stiff and needs replacing, like previously, worn suspension generally generates knocks and creaks along with a soggy ride but with lots of kickback through the front end.

Spring rate controls the rate at which springs compress, dampers control the rate at which the springs expand again. If the springs are too hard, they won't easily compress, and will transfer lots of the road surface irregularity to the chassis. If the dampers have failed, they won't control the rate at which the springs decompress, and the car will "bounce" a lot.

Getting a good balance between spring and damper rates for the expected usage is a fine art.
    Nothing to see here...

Is the current suspension stock? It may be upgraded, but not to your tastes...

Best to find out a bit more about whats on there before you get too far... May be good stuff gear but bad bushes, etc.

stiff usually means sportier... but it might not suit rough roads or comfort. see what's in there because it may be worth more than the stock suspension.

I would check whether your suspension isn't actually brand new, it may have just been upgraded, like the rest have said, see how it goes as perhaps your just reaping the benefits of someone elses investment in the car without knowing it.
