    Nice Evoms intake man!

I was thinking about one but it would be way too loud and aggressive sounding on a R32..

my EVOMS CAI was freakin louder than my exhaust

Neil it has probably quietened it down a little if anything, I guess some of the sucking sound has moved toward the front of the car whereas it used to be all in the engine bay.

Hitman, LOL, yeah this EVOMS growls like a WRX exhaust when you get on it. It's fine when you drive sedately, but there is a serious Hoover effect at WOT. It would put a $2.00 wh*re to shame.

    Chris, yeah it's a MK4 GTI

Sometimes I think that is the smartest thing to do!

My sentiments exactly. Not just velocity but turbulence also, with lots of vanes and pockets to catch air, at speed you will get ebbs and flows in the air, kind of like rapids in a stream.

I'm currently trying to work on an induction system, utilising some of the original system, where the air is taken from next to the passenger headlight. The main restrictions I see in the factory design are:
1, the funky leaf catcher plastic mesh thing
2, the big support ribs behind the plastic mesh
3, the path over and around the headlight adjusters/bulb holders
4, that teeny tiny pipe from the headlight area to the air box
5, and finally, the noise baffles in the airbox.

As D3bb4 pointed out, friction is a problem as it generates heat, so a 3" flexi pipe possibly produces the same amount of useful, un-disturbed air as a 1", smooth, slippery pipe. But that's just a guesstimate.

Yeah, I am going to change that pipe for an internally smoother one, now that the hard work of getting it all nutted out and set up is done replacing the pipe will be easy, I consider this as a prototype I guess. The other thing with the stock inlet I noticed is it has a couple of sudden 90 degree changes in airflow direction which isn't that great.

I suspect the wider collecting area of the funnel would have to help as well. The car definitely likes this setup as the pull is nice and solid thru the revs with no surging at all.

nice snowy, looks good! ive got the AEM intake on so no need for me to do that, thought about it but im to lazy as i dont think it'd really improve much more for my instance!

very stealth/tidy setup though! becareful of the rain, avoid all large puddles lol (well floods, puddles are fine!)

Finally got to do a decent run today, outside temp was a cool 4 degrees so I took the car for a 50km run and once back home lifted the hood and the intake pipe up near the housing and the housing and filter element itself were all ice-cold (I mean like VERY cold) with plenty of heat elsewhere around the engine bay, so it seems to be pushing heaps of nice cold air up there.

Sounds great snowy. Im actually planning on buying a EVOMS kit soon too and will most likely put on the stage 2 ram pipe on myself as you have just done. Is the noise difference from the standard box to the EVOMS really that much? i mean i would like a little bit of noise as we all know the standard 1.8t is almost whisper quiet! but how much of a difference is there?

Evan, you will notice quite a few different sounds actually, if you just drive normally you get a louder sucking sound and that's about it, quite a bit louder than stock but by no means offensive. But if you give it some, ...well then it is much louder then stock, now this is a funny way to describe it, but it actually sounds very similar to a deep WRX exhaust note, yeah I know, but that's what it sounds like.

When you change gears or let off the throttle you will hear a subdued "whoosh" as the diverter valve releases, but once again it is fairly subdued and not loud like some rice-burner with a full "Blow Off' valve.

I can now always hear some turbo whistle as it spins up from about 2000 rpm.

I subjectively feel it has helped my car's mods to deliver a bit more potential, just don't expect a massive performance increase, as Bug_Racer points out in another thread you are not going to get that straight up from an intake on a 1.8T. Intakes are a very controversial 1.8T mod and realistically most of us just do it to hear some nice sounds and also because we can.
