Rear wipers usually turn on when the car is in reverse and the front wipers are at least switched to intermitent. Could be that your reverse light switch or something is loose or possibly faulty... a starting point at least.
Hi all,
I am very new to this forum and the world of Mk4 Golfs and I thought the collective Golf genius here might be able to shed some light on the issue.
My 99 model Golf has some strange behaviour with the rear wiper soming on for no reason as soon as the car is started and the only way to turn it off is to switch on the front wiper and then switch the front wiper off again. This turns the rear wiper off for the remainder of the trip.
This would be Ok if it was raining on the car every time I started it up but my Golf lives in a car port and hence is usually dry and the screeching dry wiper sound is not my favourite.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Scott

Thanks for that.
Any help is appreciated.

I thought also that since they are on the same stalk there might be some issue with the stalk or the relay.
Sounds like you worked it out yourself!!! If the rear wiper does not come back on after you fiddle around with stalk most likley electrical fault lies within the stalk.
Stalk issues are pretty common.

Is a replacement stalk easy to fit?
These seem to be very complicated vehicles.
