Strange noise from engine when starting my car.

    Hey guys,
i was just wondering if you guys would know anything or have herd about this problem before.
When i start my car for the first time each day (but if i started it, had it running for 5 mins then turned it off and started it again it would still make that noise) my engine makes a strange noise, its not a grinding or squealing noise i don't know what you would call it but its not at all good!
When its been running for 20 mins if i turned it off and started it again it wouldn't make a sound.
It doesn't sound like its coming from the fan belts and pulleys.
Could it be a bearing in the engine?
I would be really appreciated if someone could provide me with some help/information.
    Thanks heaps Nick

Could be the starter motor not disengaging quickly enough.
    Does it sound like this.

If its a starter, it would make that noise all the time, regardless if the car is warm. What i understood is if the car is cold (ran for 5 min and restarted) the noise is still there. Could it be that its not getting enough oil pressure in the head so the lifters knock for a few seconds?

Yeah hydraulic lifters can make some cool noises before the oil thins out, is a symptom of all engines that use them and only gets worse with age.

You can check for if it's hydraulic lifters or something else. http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f28/...tml#post673710

This has been happening on my car for years, it does not happen every start but its worse in winter.
It is rare for it to happen with a hot engine.
In summer if might not do it for months at a time.

Lets see what the OP comes up with. It may be some thing else as others have suggested.

What viscosity oil are you using and how long is it in the engine for? If it turns to be the the hydraulic lifters make sure you use the engine flush when you do the oil change.
