strange air con problem MK4 GTi

could it perhaps be something to do with the electrical system such as a relay or someting like that?

Could be something simple like that, could be low on gas due to a leak. Best get it checked out by an expert SOON because that may prevent it from being something more expensive.

Just today I have noticed mine doing exactly the same thing
You can tell the compressor is disengaged at idle, and as Dan said, at about 60k you feel a small jolt/shudder whatever, and the aircon goes cold again.
Does sound like a clutch, but I'm going to get it checked out...

i gave a vw workshop a call on friday and asked them about the problem

they were confident that it wasnt the air con compressor, and said that it was very rare for these care to have major problems with low k's like mine

if you find out anything post it up, i cant take my car down for a week or two as im flat broke this week

Well, i had lotsa probs yesterday. A hunting idle issue, car stalling, loss or cruise control... not fun

Took the car to james at Audvolks this morning who kindly fit me in really early. We ran a VAGCOM check and low and behold, lotsa errors all reporting problems with the throttle body. James explained that there is a small motor with a twin rail resistance adjustment on the side. Apparently the ECU looks for a rating of 100, so if it's receiving a signal of 36 from the throttle body, this motor moves around until is matches 64, giving a total of 100.

Sounds like this has seized/broken whatever, and the throttle body is going haywire. Apparently not all that common, but not unheard of. We cleared the codes, did an ECU reset and will be taking the car back on Thursday.

Funny thing was, the car had no problems after all of this. Aircon, perfect all day, cruise fine and no idling/stalling/starting problems!

If there is not enough gas in the system then the Air won't even switch on. It could be that the fans are not working and therefore cooling only occurs while the car is moving.

If you have the ECON button switched I think the Air switches in and out as it needs to, to maintain the temp you have set. Have a read of the owners manual for info on how that works.
