Sounds similar to my crank angle problem on a 1.8t, but mine would stop running occasionally, and seemed to be affected by heat, so after running a while and not wanting to start, leaving it for a while it would start.
On the fuel pump, my mechanic who is a 60+ year old petrol head told me once the best way to test is if its not running, give the tank a wack near the fuel pump, if its got a dead spot it move it just enough to get spinning again.
