So I'm thinking about getting a Bora 4motion......

Have had the Golf VR6 for a while now, but its getting a bit long in the tooth, has been a fun car to own, but I never really did like the FWD. Ideally I'd like to move onto a MKIV R32 but I simply can't justify the cost. Which has brought me to the Bora 4Motion. My VR6 goes fairly hard (intake, exhaust, chip, koni/eibach) and I would want the Bora to go harder and handle better. I haven't actually driven one yet (test driving a couple this weekend) and don;'t know how they compare to the VR6 stock for stock. Any opinions???

What kind of gains could I expect from exhaust (prolly just cat-back, maybe Milltek), CAI, and cams (Techtonic) with dedicated chip? I would also fit some kind of suspension, maybe KW V2s or Bilstein PSS.

How much do you think I would expect to pay for the above? (Ive found prices of US$700 for the cams, US$700 for the exhaust, US$400 for a Giac cam chip, US$1400 for KW V2, US$1000 for Bilstein PSS, US$970 for Koni coilovers, but have no idea what postage would cost for any of this).

Depending on the price I get the car for, I would look at budgeting around $3-5k for mods.

Almost forgot, I would be pretty keen on getting the Haldex modification to turn it into more of a rear driver/oversteerer, I think there was a recent group buy with a price around AUD$1000.

the 24v responds better to mods than the 12v does. Still not cheap to go chasing power.
the haldex system is essentially still fwd. just with extra grip when you need it. The haldex upgrade just makes the rear wheels engage earlier. So will still have a front wheel bias
US chips generally are for their ECUs only. Im sure this would most likely apply to the bora as well.

The interior of these is pretty nice as well. Much nicer place to sit than the mk3.

you could just about supercharge one of these for 5k now. stock suspension is a bit flaccid too.
They have more power than the 12v engine but are substantially heavier so the extra performance is negated

Having owned 2 VR6's and now the Bora my observations are as follows.

The 24v seems to have much more torque lower in the rev range. It has variable inlet manifold and variable valve timing. Also the 6 speed gearbox gives a much better spread of ratios (VR6 has a big gap between 2nd and 3rd) which also accentuates the feeling of more torque. Stock for stock the Bora feels like it goes better as the in gear acceleration is better.

Stock for stock I would say the suspension in the Bora is probably better than a VR6 but it is a bit soft for my liking so I put Konis in.
2001 Bora 4 Motion Sport now used by number two son
2011 Skoda Octavia Scout now with Underground Performance tune
2010 Jetta 125 tdi dsg for the misses - Impressed
2006 Polo GTI - Enhanced by some of Gav's magic - Absolutely loving it

As an alternative to the Bora, theres a golf mk4 4motion for sale in queensland, it has the 2.8L v6 and looks superb. advertised for $30k which is a bit higher than the Boras

edit: apologies, cant get the link to paste properly, you'll haver to copy and paste it:

Thanks for the responses guys. Gareth, Ive seen that car advertised, but am apprehensive due to it being a private import. 2 reasons for this (keep in mind I have imported and owned 3 private imports):

    1. Insurance is a killer. It will cost near double that of the Bora
    2. While it may appear to share most parts with either a Golf 4 or Bora 4motion, international models often have different parts in many places (Ive has 1st hand experience with this). As a result, many parts need to be sourced from OS

I would only consider that Golf if they let it go for $20k, which they won't.

I think first up I would mod exhaust, suspension and intake. Should be able to do that for $2-3k. VF do a supercharger kit utilising the V9 Vortech, runs at US$4k and puts down 220-240hp at the wheels. That would be nice.

Thanks for that! Heading off now to look at one......

You would struggle to find an R32 for $30k, but I think you would have some luck around $35k, but Im not looking to spend that much (hence the Bora option).

Just did a service on Fri at AUDVOLKS, wheels and tyres and eibach springs were installed 2 weeks ago.

These are taken with a camera phone and aint the best quality picks of this magnificent car.
