Should I keep the Bora?

Hi guys,

I've had my Bora 4mo for 2 years now, bought with 186,000 kms and now have 214,000 kms on it. Loved the torque of the engine and the grip on the 4Motion, but the running costs are catching up with me. The gearbox and clutch have failed which cost me $4.5k to get fixed by Volkspower. I've had a few other issues as well previously and most of these are due to the high mileage on the car, general wear and tear.

A quick check on carsales show Bora 4Mos going for about $9k - $12k in Melbourne, but with significantly lower kms. With my kms in mind, I think I'd be lucky to get about $7.5k for it. Does anyone know a ballpark on how much I might get for a trade? Redbook says around $4k

Anyway thought I'd sound it out to you guys and get your thoughts. Keep it, or get rid of it and start again?

Boras are great,i would try to keep it going if you can...

I would not be upset about the clutch but what happened to the gearbox?
Given that you've paid $4.5k there, you would assume those components are good for another long run

What is the condition of the engine and brakes and wheel bearings?
I assume you will be up for discs/pads and maybe wheel bearings
Also factor in a major engine service ($1K?)

Or put all that money towards upgrading?

I can be tricky to determine when a car is no longer economic
It's costly when you fail to assess this or get it wrong

I had to answer this same question recently with my Golf. The gearbox shat itself and cost $3k to fix.
Should I sell it ? Can't sell with a broken gear box, gotta fix it. Now the car is worth the same as before it broke, but I'm 3 grand lighter.

Sell car for 6-8 grand then I have to find another 10-14K to to replace it with a MK5 GTI or similar.
This was all at the same time I was buying a Jetta for the Mrs and new baby was looming, down to 1 income etc.

I decided to keep it: just about everything that can break has already broken and been fixed. So lets hope it keeps going for another 3-4 years.
Once child 1 is out of day care, there is a new car every 2 years, and the Mrs is working again I can look at a 2nd hand Mk7 or 8 GTI.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I'm leaning towards keeping it and seeing it out for the year at least. Just paid rego and insurance on it so I may as well. Combined with the new gearbox and clutch, it should last a little while longer. Engine is still going strong and zero issues with it. I'll have to do the usual things to it next service (Feb) like brake pads/rotors etc.

Hopefully I can keep it running long enough to get a Mk 7 GTI
