Sorry, I should have been more clear and said MK4 GTI VR6 I'd love an R32, but the below quote is 100% correct...

but djork's got a point-- if you find a well-looked after bora with decent k's, you'll be pretty happy. And 12k could fetch a decent 4 motion with 90,xxx ~ 150,xxx on the clock

re. the weight, i think the engine makes up for it. I haven't clocked mine, but owners say it's close to a 7 second car, and the purr it makes when idle is just art (stock too)
Good news re: the folding seats, that makes a big difference. I know all about the engine note, I've spent way too long on youtube listening to VR6s!

What about the V5, CAN come with all the options of the 4mo minus the V6 and AWD i believe...
If I was to get a Bora it would have to be the V6, I need to experience that engine at least once in my lifetime.

For the dollars if you are after something else, look at a mk5 in your price range. If faster is not such an issue (love that Datto!) then find the most specced up interior you can.
or do a 4wd conversion with k04 turbo upgrade and put it on your site
I think I'd be happier with a top-spec MK4 compared to a bottom-spec MK5. I already have one project car, don't need two haha! Thanks for the kind words, too

So it looks like this thread has turned into Golf GTI vs Bora 4motion!

what kind of mileage do you guys get out of the GTIs? My 2.0 gets just shy of 600km before the warning light comes on, can I expect something similar to that? (pending right foot, of course)

I would also check out the Boras, its still a MK4 VW,but a change of body, and still very classic looking.

And the boot space is massive....awesome cars still.

Did you sell the rims and coilovers?? You could always put them on a gti. They're good cars. Fun to drive nice a nimble especially with some lowering.
