    is this right?

so I was travelling to the northerm country yesterday with a friend and she noticed with my car doing little over 100kph the car revs stay at 3000rpm? Now is this right? My cars only a 99 1.6 sr? My friend has a 2012 fiesta 1.6 even she reckons her car doesnt get up to that many revs and hers is only a 5 speed box too

    Any ideas??

yeah its normal for the 1.6 sr (my sister had one ) and for some reason they are geared really high so so it revs a lot at high speed , gets really annoying on the freeway especially on a long trip

I find that even my R32 revs quite high. At 60kph in 5th gear my car revs at around 2000rpm. I found that most other 6 speed cars I've seen/driven do that in 4th gear. I thought it was a little odd but never really questioned it, I just assumed it was because they have a really tall gear set.

I would have thought that a car with a tall gear set would rev LOWER than one which has a lower set.

EG a 5 spd car usually has 5th as overdrive and is say 0.75:1 and when you drop into it the revs drop.

In my Cruiser 4th gear at 90kph gave 2350rpm.

Drop into 5th and revs dropped to 1900rpm

5th being a taller gear gives less revs, not more

My sons old Camry revved high and I found the diff ratio was the cause.

Putting larger tyres on makes gearing a bit higher and lowers revs as the wheels do less revs per km

this, increase the rolling diameter and bring the revs down. it may however make your cars acceleration at lower speeds slower

Thats due to the 02M basically ending up the same ratio as the 5 speed but with 6 gears. It has more shorter gears than the 5 speed.

If its revving like that at high speed it is GEARED TOO LOW.

You can fix this by changing the 5th gear in the box to a different one.

Get the final gear out of a different gearbox at the wrecker. Look for a busted diesel gearbox. They are geared for a more torquey engine and thus will run at lower rpm. Generally 5th gear is not the one that gets busted, so you can pick up this sort of stuff for next to nothing.

It isn't a hard job, you need to make sure you have the tools though (especially the gear puller).

Heaps more detail at this site:

There are also companies online that sell even taller gears brand new, but generally it isn't worth the expense. There's also an extension you can buy to add a 6th gear, but it's expensive and you could buy a 6 speed box for less money (Gearbox Modifications | Eurotuning s.r.o.).
