Removing headliner to access antenna base

    Evening all,

So I got a replacement antenna base as the gasket on mine is split, and I imagine it is corroded inside to explain my crappy reception.

Found this after a Google, but I get stuck on step #2... removing the headliner! Supposedly you just pull down at the headliner where it meets the rear window, but mine won't budge at all.

    Anyone have any ideas?

It's got a lip that runs right across the rear window so you can't just pull it down without breaking it !! Just had my headliner out to get it recovered and if I had get to my antennae I'd be trying from the side by taking grab handles off and any other trim bits that you need too...
    I can't imagine it's going to be easy .....

This info is correct. You need to drop the whole trim if it's to be done properly so it will refit in the rear otherwise it will hang.

Damn. I wouldn't know where to start... and if I did, I think I'd be too worried I'd break something!

Most people just change the seal. Soak in hot water and slide it on.

I bought the car a few months ago with the cracked seal and as I have crappy reception, I suspect the base is corroded inside - so no point for me trying to repair and refit the seal. I've already got a new base and mast... so naturally I'm a bit annoyed now as I thought (based on the link I posted in my first post) that this would be straight forward!

It will take you an hour to get off .... Start at the front... Sun visors and clips, grab handles, pillar trims just pull away rear grab handles, un clip wiring for interior lights as you go .... Underneath front interior lights there's 2 screws as well.... Safety belts have to go as well to get trim off without breaking anything ....You only need to drop it enough to get an 18mm socket on to it ?? Can't remember size for mast .... Wiring for it runs down drivers side.... The liner is pretty sturdy so it goes back pretty easy .... Putting it back is another hour ....

are we talking bora or golf?
Golf doesnt require the whole headlining to be removed, can just be dropped down at the rear.
Bora on the other hand needs the head liner out.

As said before, most people (including myself) just heat the new gasket up in new water and slide it on

Thanks for that mate, hopefully have time during the week to give it a crack... if not the weekend! Doesn't sound too tricky.

Bora - found a few videos on YouTube for the Golf though which obviously doesn't help!
