Rear right brake sticks after releasing hand brake

As the title says, when I release the handbrake, it is still sticking, but not with noticeable drag. I first found out when I smelt burning to find a red hot disc.

I've been leaving my car in gear and not engaging the hand brake, only way I've found to release it is to lift the handbrake up and down whilst driving and then it seems to let go.

I took the wheel off yesterday, and looked at the cable, the movement of the cable seemed fine but gave it a bit of grease. Then the lever arm that holds the cable, this was very very stiff, but it didn't seem to stick.

Is it the actualy piston on the caliper not releasing correctly? And if so, how do I fix it?

    Cheers

It could be that there is some corrosion in there making it harder for hte piston to come back.

A caliper rebuild kit is pretty cheap locally (circa $30 IIRC) and a pretty easy job if you are a bit mechanical.

At least first, give it a bleed and see if any junk comes out. If its very dirty fluid, I would be doing a caliper rebuild. If not, perhaps look more closely at the handbrake lever on the back of the caliper.

Check the condition of the pads on each side of the rear - of the other side is notably more worn, the piston may well be partly siezed in the bore.

Thanks for your reply, I'll try a bleed then do a re build, worst case scenario, the golfs due for a service anyways, if I can't fix it they can haha

where should I look for a rebuild kit?

    Cheers

See if you can back the piston all the way out.
When you change the pads on the rear you have to turn the piston while pushing. Maybe having it go right through its range of travel will free it up ?
