    rear boot latch

    hi guys
recently picked up an MK4 and i've been trying to work out how the rear boot latch works
when the lock is in the vertical position i understand that it locks
but whats the deal with the horizontal position being locked too?

i dont get it.. i just want to be able to open the boot without having to take the key out of the ignition to open the boot.

It's a bit of a stupid design really as in my hyundai excel you could open the boot from inside the car and now if I wanna pop the boot in my gti I have to turn the car off and open it manually. I find it odd that just about everything else in the car is controlled electronicly (even the side mirrors!) except for the boot release. Sometimes I've found that leaving the lock verticle will keep the boot unlocked but this only works sometimes. Go figure hey

Are you talking about a Golf or a Bora ?

For the Golf it goes like this:
Vertical - Follows the central locking, doors unlocked = hatch unlocked
Horizontal - Always locked. You need the key at all times.

For the Bora RTFM - sorry can't help.

didn't know that, must be so when you're at the lights etc, people don't steal your bag from your boot!
    makes perfect sense to me.
i've never noticed it though... and pretty sure i've opened the boot many times with with the key in the ignition... though maybe not with the ignition on...

The boot only relocks once the car actually starts moving, not just when you turn on the ignition.
