my Car has the levelling sensors for the headlights connected one to the front a arm and one to the rear multilinks..

supposedly if you diconnect them and move them up and down you can hear the headlights moving up and down..

If you want to "hear them moving" then just do an output test with VAGCOM on the headlight motors.

    Xenon self leveling

I had to have some minor repair work which meant taking out the bi-xenons. Ever since they went back in they dont go "down & up" - self level - when the engine starts up. From this link it seems the dealer has to do it, but they have quoted $125 ..... . According to a VW mechanic these lights have a vacuum tube and thinks that it may have been left off. What's the general concensus?

If this "minor repair work" was after a front-ender then the adjusters may be broken inside the light from the "impact".

If so, then they would be covered by the accident insurance.

If not, then the person who did the "minor repair work" has not reinstalled stuff correctly and they should pay for the cost of repair by the dealer.

I am thinking the VW "mechanic" is referring to the actual Xenon bulbs being a vacuum tube maybe??

The adjusters would be manual levers that are electrically operated.

They may have to be re- initiallised with VAGCOM following the repair.

Thanks Graeme. Just the left hand one was replaced using the globe from the damaged one. Everything works except for the self leveling function...and yes it is an insurance job, so I don't mind who fixes it, but I suspect it may have been a job for the dealer, I was just wondering if anyone could actually confirm it so I could pass the info onto repairer. I'll update this post when I find out for sure.
