So... Where to Start
Its time for a Fluid Change again in the R
Now I had the Haldex done and the Filter done last time around when i had the oil and filter done!
I wish to do the Gear box and Rear Differential
Who has had their Fluid Changed in these and what fluid do they reccomend.. i read a few mentions of Redline MTL etc
over here the genuine vw stuff is about 60 bucks a quart/litre
Who has used what in theirs and how have they felt, differences etc?
Also what quantities..?
For my Engines i always use Castrol Edge 10w60 full synthetic with a new filter and flush every 8,000kms

The Castrol is fine...
Ive been told to use VW only Fluids when it comes to gearboxes etc.
but in terms of how the gearbox reacted since the last fluid change.. if anything the fluid change made it worse.. im wondering if the Stealership put the wrong fluid in...
its shifting like a peice of crap..well in my opinion it is any way.
I got redline MTL in my MK4 and the shift got better at cold... The reverse does not seem so noisy as before so it got better. I could say much better ...
I thought 60 is too thick for when it is hot... I believe the Oils VW recommends are in the 40 range ?

Penrite 5HPR is good for the.:R mate, and Redline MTL as always i fully recommend, does make the box quieter and due to its friction properties makes the shift a lot better. By the way i worked for Dub for over 10 yrs in the one dealership and around 5 in others and mate the oil coming out of the nozzle was always changing depending on the going rate. In the Uk for Dubs we used Shell Helix and Rimula for the older stuff. What you will get out of the pump in most here is 5W40 mate and generally is Castrol. As for the new diesels you will use Castrol SLX some 0W being used too. The new stuff i stay quite tight to the guidelines as ive seen dramas with variable valve timing if the viscosity is wrong.
Cheers mate and as you know everyone has their preferences and there is a lot of good quality oils out there. Makes it hard and some way over priced.

well ill give the MTL a whack cos my Cold shifting is especially sucky!!!!
being brrrrrr cold nz and all lol
I need 3 litres for the gearbox and prolly 2 litres for the rear differential hopefully it quietens thta up too!
i havent had any qualms with my MKIVs and running them on 10w60 my GTI recieved absolute death day in and day out.. 70,000kms it showed little sign of wear
any one know how much i need to buy exactly????
A 2L uses 4L of oil inc. filter. So probably mroe than that
Recommend checking castrol book at local spare parts store - they usually list quantities you need.
hahaha funnily enough the other side of my family owns the second biggest parts wholesaler/distributing chain in NZ lol
i have looked thru the books and finding anything for the r32 is a mission lol..
How much is the MTL stuff worth? My gearbox was smooth as a nun's you-know-whats when I first picked up the MKIV but now it is getting a bit notchy..
