    R32 coil packs

    Hey all,

Jmac has told me that my R32 is displaying a misfire on the computer (although not evident when driving) and has suggested one of the coils could be faulty. So i'm wondering, on ECS tuning, theres 2 coil packs, 1 is genuine and 1 is by BERU; the BERU sells for $259 USD while the genuine sells for $114USD. Why is this? Is there any gain out of using the BERU as opposed to VW?

    Regards,
    Drew.

I would stick to genuine... especially given they are cheaper in this case.

I'll get some info straight from ECS for you, but my understanding is that VW/Audi don't actually manufacture the coil packs, but rather outsource the manufacturer to other companies, Beru being one of them. Given that VW/Audi purchase probably hundreds of thousands of the parts at a time (they'd be made on consignment), they get great economies of scale, which ECS are able to in turn take advantage of. They also offer the Beru units (sold with the Beru brand rather than VW/Audi) ones as well as an option (if the VW/Audi ones are out of stock or delayed for instance), but because there's not the same economies of scale, they're more expensive - the price you pay for having them available in stock (notice they're in stock, and stocking them costs money, rather than shipping on 2-3 days leadtime where ECS get them direct from VW/Audi as you order them).

Thus, for a given revision, no real difference between them. But I will confirm that.

Incidently, they've only just started listing the Beru brand - it was something else last week (I don't remember off the top of my head what the brand was, but it wasn't Beru), so it appears they're changing suppliers as circumstances dictate too.

Just had it confirmed that Beru are the OEM for VW/Audi anyway - so the latest version are the latest version, no matter which you choose. Given the shipping delays anyway from the US, unless a few days matters, the advice we have is that you order the VW/Audi brand ones and don't pay the price premium on the Berus and end up with the same product (albeit with a different brand stamped on it) anyway.
