Have you had it scanned yet ? That would tell you quick smart what is wrong.
I'll guess that it is the crank angle sensor.
Yesterday my wife rang me and said the Bora (4mo) wouldn't start. I drove down to the car, jumped in and turned the key. After a second or 2 it hadn't fired so I put my foot on the accelerator pedal and within a second or 2 it fired up and ran normally. It ran as normal until almost exactly the same time in exactly the same place the next afternoon when my wife rang me and said that it wouldn't start.
Both times the car had been sitting for around 5 hours. So I jumped in and hey presto it wouldn't start at all. Just cranked over. Long story short RACQ guy said the fuel pump wasn't working.
Today my mate Bruce took the fuel pump out and attached some power to it and the pump ran. So then he plugged it back into the car (not in the tank) and it ran. So we put it back into the tank and now the car appears to be running fine.
Bruce says that sometimes a bit of sh** gets caught in the blades of the pump and the pump won't run. Reverse the pump or do what we did and the sh** is cleared out and the pump will be fine unless of course the offending foreign matter gets caught in the pump again.
So finally to the question. Do I buy a new pump or wait until it stops again?

It was definitely the pump. I did scan it with my Vagchecker. The pump wasn't running and then after we took it out it and gave it power it ran as mentioned in my post.

Your mate is right to an extent mate, you can reverse pumps as long as its not a K JET PUMP, i highlight this as you it just doesnt happen with KJET. Sometimes this does happen mate but i think your pump is on the way. What i would do personally would be even though it runs ok is measure the current draw. this will tell how tired your pump is. If its drawing 7 or more amps in operation its time to change it along with a filter.
For the the tech i must admit its so much better when you get a DOA but with your story i would check the current draw mate
Cheers for now

Thanks Jimmy. I'll suggest it to Bruce. Yes he said the same thing. If the pump was dead then there is no decision to be made. But the fact that is all working makes the decision that much harder.
The pumps are not cheap though and because it is a bit of an odd pump because of the 4Mo having a semi split tank set up it seems that there aren't many options other than genuine. I was going to buy the pump so that I had one handy if mine stops again. Bruce said that if I was going to buy the pump then we may as well put it in.
