You have the oil the wrong way round. The 5/40 would be better for the heat, staying thicker at higher temps, but still thin from cold starts.

There isnt a gasket, sump to engine. VW use sealant, just the tiniest amount though. Both surfaces are machined flat. a 2mm bead would be plenty.
yep, I found that when I got there, luckily I found another mk4 gti, so I went to dandy to have a look... its oil pan had a big gash and the engine was cactus... a sober reminder.

anyway, the weld was rubbish so i redid the repair, though this time i used an aluminium brazing rod. actually quite happy with the repair.
now im just waiting for any leaks. i'm particularly paying attention to the flange, i mean I may have used a bit much if thats all they use at VW. i put a thin even layer all the way around but not as tidy as that.
Ill be doing some careful watching and research and ill report back.

on the plus side I got a fresh set of gti floor mats for 10$ at the wrecker!
