problems with the 01 golf :-(

Hello everyone, this is my very first post
I have owned my Golf Mk 4 for 5 months, and it seems to have a broken piston ring. What should I do?!?! I have been quoted between $3000 and $6000 to get the mechanic to fix it just by a phone conversation with Leon's motors. Or there is a Golf at one of the wreckers in Brisbane I have been quoted $1500 to buy the engine then another $1500 to get it into my car. I looked into trading it in for a new polo but they will only give me $6000 towards the new one - I bought it for $12500 so thats a big loss for just a few months of driving!
This is my first real car (I had a 72 Type 3 before this one) and I only know a little bit about motors so I really have no idea what to do.

It's just done 170 000kms, and I am located in Brisbane.
It's the 2001 2L model if that info helps

    Any advice would be great
    Thanks Karina

    piston rings

Hi Karina and welcome to the forum.

I would probably get someone to actually look at the car. I think it would be difficult to give an accurate indication as to the cost or what the problem would be just over the phone...I am assuming that the car is still mobile....

If you talk to Jmac (he is in this forum and is in Bris) that would be a good place to start.

well it was running ridiculously rough so then i took it to the mechanic just down the road and he said oil was leaking into the 2nd cylinder, so then i took it to my mums mechanic and he said that was happening because the piston ring was broken - he did some kind of tests on it and decided that was the reason why. thats the information i have gotten so far!
jess, it wasnt me! i swear! i didnt break it

Probably a wet compression test, where they put a small amount of oil into the cylinder with the low compression reading to see if that improves the reading as it helps seal the rings against the cylinder walls if they're worn - a dry test wouldn't differentiate between rings being bad and a problem with valves not sealing as they should).
    Nothing to see here...
