Is the car sounding like a WRX and not going as well as it did?
Gavin
Hi,
I have my car booked in next week as I suspect the coil pack has gone, and I have read thru the forums and know it can be a few things like sensors etc but Ill get them to scan it to confirm before I pay.
But, was wondering why these are so expensive, I got quoted from a few dealers $180 for my 99 GTI MKIV? Does this sound right?
Thanks in advance

Apologies, Im in western Sydney.
Yes does sound like REX, but when it first happened it lasted for about 10 mins then went away, then on next start (after sitting for 8 hours) wasnt there until about 10 mins in, then next time (after sitting for 12 hours ) about 20 mins and now it is there constantly
I have read thru the forum that some people have had this problem and it could be the MAF or the ignition sensor, or a coil pack but I just booked it in at the local dealer to see what they say.
Thanks again
Could be a coil pack but on the MK4 with bolt down coil packs they don't go wrong as often as the push on ones.
It might be a bit if a ride but I bet it would be worth your while taking a ride to see Matt.

It could also be the amp that sits in the side of the airbox, they fail too. They get hot which is why VW put them in the airbox where there is constant airflow around them.

imo you'd be better off just going new and saving yourself for any further headaches instead of going to a wrecking yard(s).
if its the module itself the $180-200 is about right!
you can also try Seb @ EuroAutomotive on 0410-541-322 in Girraween (in western sydney) just near Parra Area. Im sure he or others on here who have VagCom would happily scan your car for free and give you quote/diagnosis on whats the issues/costings for yourself..
hope that helps!
with the amount of ppl that post about issues with dealers and their hideous prices that they charge and their inability to resolve even the most simple of issues ,members still try their luck.........
if I had only a choice between a dealer and some half back yardie bodgy,id trust the back yard anyday! AT LEAST ITS CLEAR WHAT YOU ARE IN FOR.......
watercool, those 2 mechanics that have been referred to you are 2 of the best VW mechs in sydney.
if yoru north, try derek @ euro autotech
east theres quite a few repairs, jade auto @ rosebery, and not sure who else! forgot to add that sorry lol
I`d suspect the module before the coil packs. I`d test before spending your money.
I`m at Campbelltown, bring it down and I`ll sort it for you.

Thanks Every one, Ill give Seb a ring as Im not sure my car would make it to Camden, but really appreciate the offer Golf Loon.
Just a big thanks to Seb for letting me come over late Wednesday night and for fixing it
Just so every one knows it was the ignition sensor (or what ever its called near the MAF)
Symptoms was the feeling as though its running on about 3 cylinders but still ideal fine but no power on full throttle. This would come and go (eg full power for a while, then 3 cyclinders, full then 3 etc etc)
Thanks for every ones suggestions, much appreciated
Cheers
