Wouldn't be hard to remove the air box and shove one on the end of the MAF sensor.
Hi guys,
im abit of a newbie to the forum and dont really know much about engine side of things.
i drive a 2002 golf GTI and im looking to increase my inductions noise by putting a K&N Pod Filter on, rather than spending a few hundred on a full intake system.
so my questions are;
-How easy is it to install a K&N Pod Filter? ( i noticed some connections leading into the standard airbox, and that has got me thinking its going to be harder than i thought it will be to install one.)
-what is that connection leading into the airbox?
-what are the risks of putting a Pod Filter on? i only recently got the car so i dont want problems down the track...
help and advice would be much appreciated
cheers,
Jono

Running an uncovered pod filter is a detectable offence in NSW. Not saying that you should or shouldn't do it, but just be aware of what you're opening yourself up to.
When you say connections - do you mean electrical or just the plastic air intakes?
Nothing to see here...
A pod filter will filter less gunk then the original filter, it might cause premature MAF sensor failure; and/or more engine wear. It will also suck in hotter air from the engine than your original airbox design does I think ( unless it is properly masked inside the engine bay with separating walls and has an opening to get fresh air from outside ) ...
I believe that the bad things it can potentially do does not make up for a bit of induction noise gained.
But each to it's own

That is your piping from the air pump, it is pumping cool air into the airbox when engine is very cold to reduce the emissions...
There are very low emissions engine, I think they are Euro 4 standard. Removing that will not cause your car any harm, just to the environment.

Not really worth the percieved gains...Yes, you get the noise, but thats it. Increased intake tempreture will kill engine performance, and is illegal. Up to you though. I would look at a K&N panel filter, and a good diverter valve for extra noise.

I had a POD filter on my car when i just got it and after a few months of having the filter the MAF died from the oil in the filter. This wasnt cheap to replace. Im not sure how it would affect the GTi engine tho. Id get the proper cold air intake, it makes so so so much difference especially on an FI car

That thing is a heat sink for the ignition. Just cable tie it up near the firewall.
It was put on the air box for better ventilation.
I have BMC air intake, over priced for what it is, does bugger all but make noise, it is legal as it is enclosed.
Have you looked into the Heineken setup ?http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4137466
