    Overheating bora. Fan not working

Help. Our Bora has been overheating. We were driving in heavy traffic when the temp went so high the alarm came and we stopped immediately. We made it to our destination and found that when we were driving at speed, the temp dropped. When we stopped the fan was not going therefore I am thinking that it is a fan relay problem. Any thoughts? If it is. Where can I get one?
    Cheers

Hi there , where you battery is check inside the black plastic cover , there is fuseable links in there. Most likely one of the 30amp fuses or the holder will be melted/open circuit. Now to fit a new one might fix short term but you may find that 1 or both of the fans are shorting. Normally the test for this is put the AC on and the condensor fans should cut in straight away, if not they will cut in and out on only 1 speed. This is a good indication the fans are gone. Mate 1st thing to do is look in the fuseable link area
Cheers and good luck, worst comes to the worst you can by pass the block connector and make your own

Ironically, this happened to me just 2 weeks ago... took it to VW and got it sorted, but $1200 later! 2 x Fans, fuse and labour.

I had a chronic vibration and bad idle whenever I came to a stop, but fine(ish) when driving.

    Yikes, the poor Boro!

Mine overheated badly once, but it was simply the fuse for the fan. Aircon didn't work at the time either, but it's all good now and fixed for cheap.

Sucks to hear about the fans etc, such a nice car

i had the same problem, just the fuse went on the inrush current, its best to replace the fuse link with slow blow, some regular fuses blow out in the large inrush current, bceause the bora's 2 fans are quite strong,
also, they are normal brushed motors, not induction motors so they always temporarily short on startup

Sorry to bump an old thread but does anybody know if just one or both fans turn on with the a/c? I've found that with the a/c on my bora only turns on the smaller fan onto low speed untill things obviously heat up when both fans kick in and onto high speed.

    That would probably be correct.

Hmmm had a closer look at the fans today because the car started overheating, looks like the larger fan isn't working at all anymore. If i spin it manually it'll sometimes spin up for brief period then stop.

Anybody recommend anywhere in Adelaide i could get a set of fans?

    Cheers,
    Robert

The fans stopped working on my Bora 4Mo some years ago. It got hot when I was going up to Mount Glorious.

I got the above modification done (It cost less than $150.00 as I recall) and I still have the original fans in my car (2001 with 170,000k's) with everything still working as it should.
2001 Bora 4 Motion Sport now used by number two son
2011 Skoda Octavia Scout now with Underground Performance tune
2010 Jetta 125 tdi dsg for the misses - Impressed
2006 Polo GTI - Enhanced by some of Gav's magic - Absolutely loving it
