Hey everyone, thought I would regail you all with our tail of woe our Bora 4motion put us through recently!
First symptom was that I couldn't put the car into reverse, but all 6 forward gears were working perfectly.
Drove the car home via the ring road to Greensborough, and after stopping suddenly I was miraculously able to select reverse....because I had also lost 1st and 2nd gears!
I was able to bunny hop around the corner in 3rd before *BANG* *clunk* *clunk* *clunk* *clunk* *clunk* *clunk*
Car towed home on the back of a flatbed, and then off to the Volkwerke workshop first thing in the morning.
Turns out that a small U-shaped selector had sheared off the 1st-2nd shift fork, bounced around the gearbox, then went straight through 1st (or maybe 2nd) and reverse gears...like a stick through a garden mulcher!
So the car spent about 2 1/2 weeks at the workshop, the list of works and parts included:
two new gears
new 1st-2nd shift fork
gearbox rebuild including fluids
new clutch
new dual mass flywheel
new front wheel bearings
new lower control arms (cause they were cheaper than having new bushes punched in and re-fitted)
Total bill was $4600 in the end!!
Interestingly, I was in the rare situation, where I could actually inspect my clutch and flywheel personally to decide whether it was worth replacing, how often does that happen?
Volkwerke did a sensational job, with a great price too, as $4600 is a tough pill to swallow! Thanks fellas!
Everything I've read about the Bora 6-speed is that they're tough as nails, and it came as a huge suprise to the guys at Volkwerke too!
Thought I'd share this with the mk4 owner's...not sure if its worthy of caution, since I had no symptoms at all before I could no longer select reverse.
Cheers guys!
don't say any of that. Because ill be coming for you when it happens to me :O
