Once and for all - What is stock boost on MK4 GTI?

    Hi Gang,

I've searched, I've googled, I've asked and I'm getting different answers every time. Can someone tell me what the stock boost is on a 2000 model GTI?

Someone told me 6psi, someone else told me 11, a mechanic told me 7, another forum is 'certain' it's 14!

I thought it was 7psi but I installed a boost gauge and mine peaks at 11psi.

(That's stock except for a full 2.5" exhaust / with dump, and a pod filter. So if it is 7psi, is it possible that an exhaust and pod gives an extra 4psi...)

I'm pretty sure i read somewhere on VW Vortex that it was around 8.7 . It may have been different depending on engine codes though...

    Here's the page i found:

It doesn't specifically list the AGU code specs, but all the 110kw spec engines seem to be listed as 8.7psi

Prior to Gavin updating the software on my car, it would peak at 11, then drop back to about 9

VW are pretty good at being ambiguous with their boost figures. The G60 was considered to be serviceable within something like 5 to 9PSI.

I reckon the MK4 is good anywhere between 7 to 9/10 PSI. You have to understand how the boost is used by the engine and also how are you measuring it, is the gauge calibrated?

If you try and get a reading in first or second you won't see as much, as if you ran in 3rd or 4th.

ok after much research on the topic i think i know 1 of the major factors that causes the fluctuation in boost from 1.8T to 1.8T and that would be the actual Wastegate's actuator. I dunno if u guys have heard of this mod or not where u "crank" the actuator to increase or decrease the amount of boost that builds.

look at number 12. cranked wastegate.
