what symptoms where you having to require a new turbo put in?
and i've read about sludge buildup where the oil pickup in the sump gets blocked, so that could be what they're investigating?
Hey guys,
Recently was told my turbo was on the way out on my 01 GTi. Got a shop here to change turbo from one secondhand of which I bought from a fellow forum member.
Ran smooth for 20 mins then oil light came on. Now back in workshop and was told that there is no oil pressure at all and is investigation the internal sump part of the engine. Any chance it being the new turbo attached as it is the only common denominator in all this? has only 110k klms on the clock. Also sounds now like a diesel was told it was due to the oil not circulating as it should.
Any ideas??
Many Thanks

A turbo fin was bent due to diverter valve not actuating while outside of my ownership. Developed a whining noise.
Spoke to mechanic today that has ordered a new oil pick up unit as it was clogged up and full off gunk, but said it may also be the oil pump.
Havent heard of an oil pump ceasing before with these low kays.
Missing out or late oil changes causes the pump's pick up to get clogged up. It's not an uncommon occurrence unfortunately. Worth dropping the sump off to check it out if you have a 10 year old car.

Thanks Gavin, it was deffiniately clogged up so new part will tell hopefully.
Cheers
Unfortunately the 1.8T is bad for sludge. As Gav says regular oil changes are the go. Worst nightmare is getting to service a car thats had suspect services, trouble is you fill it with nice new oil and it shoves all the gunk and carbon into the strainer. Then the dreaded oil light stays on. Hard one to explain when it isnt your fault.
Hope it works out, sure the new pick up will be like getting a heart for the engine
Cheers

The saga continues...............................
Oil pump pick up has been replaced and oil light has now disappeared and engine doesnt sound like a diesel anymore etc etc.
but........................ the turbo (replaced one) doesnt seem to spool up now. Car drives beautifully smooth but doesnt have any pick up. The engine isnt choking or anything. I am just hoping I didnt seize the turbo when the oil wasnt running through (oil pump pick up problem).
Any thoughts because I sure as hell don't want to go down the replacing turbo stage again.
Many Thanks

You may need to have to the turbo looked at... It may not be spooling up to its full potential, Get a boost guage onto one of the vacuum lines and see how much boost you are producing.
