Thread: Oh dear...

  1. #11

Okay, when I got it started this morning the ABS was on again, so it was probably just being temperamental.
A lady in an Audi A6 at the servo gave me Kierans number from AVW, so I rang him and am taking my car in tomorrow. I'm less than 10 minutes away from there so it's much easier.
I told him where I was from and he told me there's no wonder why it's in the state it is.
I had the only Bora in Port Lincoln, and the mechanics there had no idea what the hell a V5 was.
    Yay.

Thankyou for your help everyone, I'll keep you posted.

No timing belt on the V5, it is chain.

Worth checking the condition of the chain tensioner though.

Sounds like you're in good hands with AVW.
    Nothing to see here...

    THANK GOD for that!

Well we had our little visit with AVW today, very happy with the service there.
Got my new battery and some things checked out. Some rubber bushings in the suspension are the worst he's ever seen apparently.
Looks like they've got alot more business coming their way from me. lol.
Very happy, will be going back for sure

Another thing though, anyone ever heard of the indicator stalk going floppy? When I got my car back after I lent it to one of my friends it was floppy, and always goes on over bumps. So annoying.

yep 120k service involves inspection of the timing chain, but if it isnt noisy it should be fine.

If the front bushes are gone, consider getting the ECS Refresh Kit as this will replace many commonly worn parts. The Stage 2 kit has the Audi TT Bushes, so this will be an improvement over the stock bushes.

AVW are really good - the car yard I bought my car from uses them and they sorted out some warranty issues for me and also scanned my car for nothing when an ignition coil went...he chased up the nearest stock for me all for nothing too

I actually take my car to German Auto as its closer to work and I highly recommend them as well.

no ideas about the stalk - was your friend used to driving a car with lights on the left, sounds like they was a bit rough!

If you ever find you need ignition coils (common issue) let me know as I'm in Adelaide and have several spares

Once the car is running, you don't use the battery much at all, the alternator provides all the current required to run things whilst the engine is running. Based on the fact that the car operates fine when the engine's running, I'd say your battery is most likely cactus, and is refusing to take a charge. Easiest way to tell is to put a multimeter across the terminals when the engine isn't running - it should produce 12v, but I'm willing to bet it's producing only 10v or even 8v (meaning it's dropped a cell or two). You'll need a new battery regardless of whether the alternator's also stuffed, so that would be a good start.

My guess is that the ABS disabled itself due to there being no battery power available to it as the car started. Get the battery replaced.

The easiest way to get an estimate for this is to call a VW dealership service department and ask them. That will give you a worst-case situation. I can't remember if 100,000km or 120,000km is a major service on the Mk4, the service department will know.

Then you can work on finding an independent workshop - talking to fellow SA dubbers will help here, as you'll quickly learn which places have a good reputation and which do not.

No enemies here. Given how much you've pumped into the car so far, selling it would just leave you at a terrible loss, so for the sake of what could only be a few hundred dollars, I'd be persisting.

One thing you didn't mention is exactly what vehicle it is?
    If it is any help.
