Thanks for the info, I will keep my eye out.

I haven't had a small car since my Holden Gemini in 1983, so to drive a small car like this Golf is a revelation.

My current car is a Holden (Yep I'm a Holden man ) VZ 6L 'Thunder Ute' that I use for work (but must admit is usually empty in the back). It's a bit scary to drive in the wet, but it is fun

Fuel prices are alot better than what they were but if it goes up again, I think the ute will go. I think the next time the fuel prices go up we will not see them come down.

    Anyway have a great day!

Not all Mk IVs, just the 1.6L version.

even later versions such as 03? ALL 1.6L versions?
I'm test driving it today, any tips on how i can see if this car is affected by the fault?
when can i expect for the transmission to get stuffed up (how many k's)? It's an auto- how much am I looking at to have that fixed? I can at least try knock the dealer down on price.

I could be wrong, but I thought it was only manuals that were affected.

Clarkee thats great to hear. We are really enjoying our first Golf in the family. We now have three drivers in the family and all of us like to take the Golf out for a zip here and there.
The latest tank of fuel we are on - 420km and we are at 1/2 full! My ute would be empty! My wife asked me how much was it to fill up - I say " I can't remember!" " It was that long ago!'

    Cheers to you all
