    Repair kit

I'm picking up the repair kit today so I'll see how I get on tonight.

This is my first VW and it is certainly "challenging" to say the least

This REALLY should have been a VW recall along with brake light switches.

Anyway's follow those instructions and you will be ace. Remember to use the four different spindle's they have special lugs so you can get the cable in without brute strength.

You should probably do both as the passenger will fail eventually.

Or have the kit sitting around for when it does.

Yeh bad luck on all the string of probs dude !

Oh no, don't say I should be looking out for the brake light switch to fail next........if I was restoring a classic i'd think this was fun...a challenge but this is my daily drive...

Brake light switches are easy and cheaply repaired Sorry !!!

Possibly done already.Get someone to do a vag scan, or at night, get in the car and just touch the brake light between being on and off a few times. If after a couple of times it hasn't gone on when supposed to than possibly brake light switch. But vag-com is the sure way.

    all done

    Hi all,

I have finished replacing the window regulator...all is well.

I guess I am a little...no a lot... disappointed in how many "common problems" the golfs have. I have never owned a car like this before where I am now waiting for the next thing to break/fall off/stop working etc...

I am probably not the only one who bought a VW because "everyone knows they go for ever" but I have had to repair or replace more items in the last year of golf ownership than in the last 25 years of owning a car, and the cars I have owned in the past have been nothing special...a Holden Gemini x 2, Holden Barina, Ford EB2 Fairmont, Daihatsu Charade (17 years I owned that for) and my current other car is a Holden Jackaroo.

As I do all my own servicing I have spent no more than $1000 in "repairs" over 25 years but have spent near $6000 in breakdown repairs on the Golf in 16 months of owning it.

I guess I am just a little disillusioned at the moment.

Geez, sorry to see you having such a string of problems, I hope it settles down for you.

It's wrong that over the life of the MK4 VW hasn't addressed some of the inherent common problems, like the Window Regulators (by recall/replacement with metal ones) and the Clutch Pedal components that seem to eventually snap (same problem in Audis that use these parts).

quick easy fix for brake light switch braking.

gentle tug on switch, spray full of CRC. pop back in and click a few times should sort out problem.

did this with mine when i got the mk4 18 months ago. Have not had a problem since.

Unfortunately modern cars are just a lot more sophisicated, (more to break) althought I admit you've had a bad run, there is not that much electronically on a Gemini or a 17 year old Charade that can break, (not in comparison to a late model Golf anyways).

It wouldn't matter what 10 year old car you bought you run the risk, a friend of mine had a Toyota a few years back, no end of problems including electric window failures.
