Hey mate, there is a plastic piece in the window regular that is prone to failure (breaks). It's a common fault on Golfs - forunately, I believe, you can fix it yourself and replace the broken part with a metal replacement so it won't happen again.
Hi all,
I have yet another problem with my Mk4.
This morning I went to wind the window down...(as the air conditioning is still stuffed) and there was a crunch, crunch noise. The window drove down but now will not come up.
It sounded for all the world like a chain jumping off a sprocket. Does the golf have a chain drive like some other cars or are these the symptoms of the regulator failure that I have read about?
The window didn't just fall down like some others...did seem to drive but won't come back up.
Any suggestions before I strip the door down????
Not happy Jan.......

I had the exact problem you described last week. It was the regulator which is available for around $110 (repair kit). It does involve stripping down the door (instructions here on Vortex) or you can get it done by VW for around an hour of labour charges.
Good luck!

Feeling for you mate.
It is not too complicated to fix however. Best of luck with it.
Farout, from your previous posts you seem to have a great lot of problems, I hope you eventually get them all sorted and start to enjoy the damn thing trouble-free.
Goodluck mate, I can't help withe info on the window however.

Hi guys thanks for the responses. I have rung VW and there is a repair kit available $115 was the price I was quoted.
Is it a big job to do it myself? I am a fitter and turner by trade so no dummy with the spanners.

RICE - Leave the useless wings to the Penguins...
Hi All,
Well I have pulled the door apart tonight to see what the problem was.
To my surprise, the plastic clips appear intact although the cable had come out of one of them. The cable seems to have jammed and munched itself around the regulator winding mechanism. The cable is now too kinked and bent up to put back in.
Could some part of the clip have broken thus letting the cable go or is the cable coming away from the clip the result of it getting jammed around the winding mechanism...if that makes sense?????? What is the area that usually breaks?
I would like to know if there is something to look for before I put it all back together tomorrow night.

To be honest its not a hard job when you have done plenty, repair kit is a wee bit fiddly. First timer will even with skill find it fiddly mainly due to a couple of little tricks. I think you could manage no worries. If you find yourself having a go and remove the door card and think "What the?" give us a ring and ill talk you through the tricky bits
Cheers
