    noisy air con

    Hey guys,

The hot weather must be getting to the golf. Both last when driving home and today when driving around at lunch, I had the climate control on, and all was good until after about 20 - 30 minutes of driving there was quite a loud whirring noise. Basically at idle you don't really hear it but, it happens as you rev the car, or you are downshifting through the gears. When i turn the air con off the car sounds fine.

Could the air con unit need some basic maintenance or is the compressor on its last legs?

    Dan.

Could be a bearing in the compressor or maybe the compressor clutch.....
Have a look at the comp with the car running ,see if the clutch is working how it should and if it is and the sound is comming from the comp then i say at a guess its a bearing. I take it that the system is still cold tho ?

Mate the bearing in the serpentine belt pulley might be worn. This gets loaded up when the Air is on. Have a listen in that area

Thanks for the replies. I think this might be on the the money. I had a listen last night when i got home and there was definitely a mild squeak/whistle coming from that area at idle. Should this be easily repaired? i.e. I'm hoping they won't want to replace the whole compressor... either way, i'm going to call about it this morning and book the car in....

That's awesome mate. I can't wait for my 42DD exhaust to turn up as well.
It was good to meet you too.

Mine seems to get a second wind so to speak about 2-5 mins into a drive. It blows cold okay then later WOOOOSH it really gets going and blows harder into the cabin. Not sure why, but could yours be doing the same???

Just to add mate the belt tensioner is a complete item. Loads around though, i would be tempted to pm Golf Loon he will have one for sure. The pulleys come off seperate but can only be bought complete, go figure. He may still have a good pullley
    Cheers

make sure you don't have one of your vents at like 95% closed position.
that was the most succesful fix i've ever made when i heard my aircon whirring, and found out it was just because the vent was causing the whistle!

I'm not sure about that mate. Mine fluctuates a bit but only when it's set to auto, as you'd expect... Even before this noise developed, it has felt like the air con has been stealing more power from the engine than usual. A mechanic is checking the pulley bearings for me on wednesday and we'll see how we go.

hehe....nah, mine is definitely making noise from outside the car.... It's pretty noticable when it happens.
