Did you get a look at your old flywheel and clutch? How badly scarred/worn were they?
I had the problem of 5th slipping when under power and then 4th, so I finally bit the bullet. The options were for the VW Dual Mass flywheel and clutch or to change to the lighter Single Mass flywheel and clutch. I saved around $1200 and have a sweet combination with the lighter flywheel. All up, the parts and labor worked out to be $1450, with the car of the road for 1 day.
If anyone was like me and not sure about moving away from the Dual Mass, then from my experience this is well worth it and cheaper. The motor accelerates better and the clutch has a solid engaging point. This combination is supposed to able to handle a bit more punishment too.
You have to be a little more smoother with the stop start in traffic otherwise it's great.

Nothing to see here...
I didn't get a look, but the mechanic said they were shot. In fact I nearly had a major issue as the thrust bearing holding pin (something like that) had fractured and was about to let go and leave me with more damage that just the clutch and flywheel. The halves were two inch long and they were just hanging on when they pulled it all out.

what part numbers? their online catalogue doesn't seem to cover much...
I don't think this is a problem with the clutch itself but the fork that holds the release bearing falling apart.
It a VW part and they are known to fail. I had one go on my A3, a new one was $44 from VW.
Look closely you can see the cracks developing.
The new straight one.
