hey guys i have a 1999 vw golf mk4 1.8 agn 5 speed manual i just need to know how much and how long it would take for a vw dealer to replace the clutch pressure plate throw away bearing etc. (just need to know labour prices so i dont get ripped off as i already have the parts)

Hey Jai, I'm currently looking at clutch options for my GTI as well. I've been told it's a dual mass flywheel and needs to be done as a kit not just the clutch plate. Mine is 2003 though, so not sure if yours would be the same as it's older as well. They estimated $2k all up and over half of that is labour so I'm looking at ECS /online instead of buying locally. Keep us posted on what you find out.

Probably best to ring up some places and ask them. They should be able to give you a rough estimate. It will be fairly costly as its a tranny and possibly engine out job.

Only reason they told you had to do both geoff was due to dual mass flywheels getting worn out and having slop in them it was more a recommendation that a necessary (still a good idea tho)

just did my clutch in my 98 a3 (agu 1.8T - same engine/trans)
i managed to pick up Volkswagen Golf IV 1.8T > Drivetrain > Clutch > ES#125 Clutch Kit - 14lbs. Lightweight Steel Flywheel - ESR198031S1 ~$400
plus fitment ~$500 + GST = $550

total = $950

i also had to change my clutch fork and opted to replace the slave clutch cylinder so that added about $150-200 but i was pretty happy with the price as i was quoted $1200-1700 from a few different places


highly recommend the clutch kit though, loving it.

Getting a new clutch for my 1.8t agu and I'm getting a single mass flywheel conversion and new clutch from exedy for $800, you'll be amazed how much cheaper they are from your local auto store than you think...

I priced one up not so long ago.

An LUK kit with DMF was around $950, from memory. An Exedy kit, with SMF, was about $800. These may have been trade prices, though.

Labour-wise, it's a pretty straight-forward job. 5 hours TOPS. Price will vary depending on the labour rate.

I'm thinking about one of these while the $A is still reasonably high . I know it doesn't include shipping but still seems to be cheaper than bits here. I've been quoted $1000 just for the DMF.
Does anyone know if there is a way to tell if the DMF needs to be replaced? I drive the car like an old lady and so did the old bloke who had it before me.
