    Need a new throttle body?

Guys I'm having some major pain here - really need some help / advice.

I had my battery disconnected the other day and decided I'd give the throttle body adaption in vagcom a whirl. Never tried it before. The car was running fine, should have left well enough alone....anyway, followed all the instructions and started the adaption, after about second it failed and came up with the Group 098 Not Available garbage.

The car now runs like crap (some sort of limp mode) and I've got two fault codes that won't clear no matter what I do:

    Code:
17973 - Throttle Actuator (J338): Lower Stop not Reached
            P1565 - 35-00 - -

17967 - Throttle Body (J338): Fault in basic settings
            P1559 - 35-00 - -
After driving for a bit I also seem to get:

    Code:
    01165 - Throttle Body Control Module (J338)
            17-10 - Control Difference - Intermittent

    00282 - Throttle Position Actuator (V60)
            27-00 - Implausible Signal
I've tried disconnecting the battery and taking the throttle body off and cleaning it, but it hasn't helped. So I'm assuming somehow doing the adaptation has screwed it up, and I need a new throttle body?? Without having another TB to try on the harness I've got no way to be sure.

So I spent yesterday trying to source one -
    * Rang VW for a price on a new one - Over $1000. Are they for real? How can it possibly cost that much.
    * Rang a wrecker in Villawood - gave them the exact model number of mine and they said they had one - $250. So I drive all the way up from wollongong and when the guy brings it out it's got some pretty major damage. When I pointed it out, they swapped it for another one which looked the same, so I didn't check the model number on it but when I get back to wgong I find it's slightly different - Mine is 06A 133 063 F. This one was 06A 133 063 G. Turns out the 'G' version is for cars without cruise control. Fark..
    * So I ring them up again today tell them they've given me the wrong part and Mario calls me back to say they've got another one, but I can't have it at that price - he reckon's the first guy made a mistake selling it to me at $250, that the 1.8T TBs sell for $500+, but he'd do it for $450 for me in this case, so I'd have to pay the difference if I want to swap it. Needless to say I'm not too happy with these guys - they're screwing me around big time.

But I'm in a pickle now. I've done $250 on a TB that won't fit and still don't know if that is what is wrong with mine. I can justify spending $250 on a hunch, but not $450.
So if anyone wants a non-cruise TB (originally off an A3 1.8T I believe) for $250 I'd rather sell it to you than take it back for a refund and have them sell it back to one of us for double that. Let me know ASAP though as I'll have to sort out a refund early next week.

If you've got any ideas where I can get a decent price on a replacement TB for mine, or if there's something else I can try to get mine working, would really appreciate hearing them.

    Cheers,
    Mick

not that im a expert in the computer side of things but if you screwed around with the VAGCOM and altered the program ,what makes you think the TB is now screwed? to me it sounds like you have a issue with the software now which in turn is controlling the TB.

and another question which im sure most ppl that read this will ask,why did you play around with the VAGCOM if you are not proficient in it?

doubt you will find a second hand TB here.try asking bug racer or golf loon.

Plan B is to find another wrecker with the right part will to swap the "better" part (read the one you have) for the "crappy" one without cruise control... yeah, sell them that

Worst case you might pay an "exchange fee" which would be less than the $250 they want.

Whenever the battery is replaced you must reset the basic settings on the throttle body. This is done with your vagcom, they run very badly if you dont do this basic thing!!

Thanks for the replies gents - just to clear up a couple of things - I was trying to do what Andrew was saying in the last post there, that's why I was in VAGCOM. I also followed Ross-Tech's instructions to the letter and have since emailed them asking whether there was any risk associated with the procedure... according to them it shouldn't have done any damage - just calibrates the TB/TPS. They did say though that if my TB was on its way out, doing the alignment might be enough to tip it over....

In hindsight I wish I did leave it alone....but too late to worry about that...

I only performed the alignment as per: http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/throttlebody.html. I haven't changed any other settings in there except clear the DTCs...

If it turns out the TB is not the problem, you are entitled to return it and get your money back as the part does not suit the application for which it was ordered.

First thing though is to accurately diagnose the problem.

the alignment on my car was done when I first bought it and it didnt have any issues.... sounds like since you have reset the vagcom and there is still a problem ,then obviously your tb is stuffed. unless you can find a friendly mk4 gti owner who will let you try their tb and if the car runs smoothly, then you will know for sure its that.....

I use a rule for when Im screwing with something,if I dont completely understand it,I dont touch it.

See if a dealer put in the TB on their own advice, yeah, but if YOU buy a perfectly good part and use it (which you would do in this case) only to find your original is fine, it's up to the good will of the seller if they want to take it back or not.

Unused, boxed items are a bit different...

You seem pretty friendly, you're not near Wollongong are you? hehe

Seriously though, if anyone was willing to do this, there'd be a case of beer in it for you...even if we plugged my TB onto their harness and see if the errors come up-would help narrow things down...

Re the refund stuff - yeah when I first spoke to the guy I asked about warranty and he went on this big rant about how guys buy these things then find they weren't the problem after all and want to return them - said he'll only refund it if it's faulty. Which is fair enough, I don't really have an issue with that. In my case though, they've given me the wrong part, so I'm not expecting any problems returning it. Just thought if they really are selling for $500 maybe someone needed one and I could sell it to them cheap without being out of pocket.
