Are you after a little or a lot of performance?
Improved or race track handling?
Subtle or OTT looks?
So many things to choose. Wheels, suspension, tints, body kit, exhaust, cai, turbo upgrade, brake upgrade, short shift, interior...
Maybe tell us what you want and how much you plan to spend to get it.

Suspension my friend, is the best place to start. Especially with a rear-antiroll bar, this will be the single bigest handling upgrade you could do on your golf. Then wheels and tires. After that I would look at a good spring and shock combo or if you want to go super low (and ruin your handling) coilovers or airbags. As well as that, a full re-bushing all around won't go astray.
Then you can look at power upgrades if you want to leave stock GTIs and the like in your wake along with brake size increases (required for any forced induction upgrades). Personally I would look down the supercharger route, yeah it saps the engine of some power, but isn't the whole point of forced induction to give you more power anyway?? Plus you get instant torque and power increases whereas turbos wait until you have enough exhaust flow, along with big exhaust, vacuum and ecu upgrades.
THEN I would bore out the cylinders, open them up with bigger pistons etc for a 2.5 - 2.8ltr engine, strengthen the studs etc, port the head, full ECU re-map and fuel system upgrade, LSD or full 4Motion conversion and you would have a giant killer of a golf. Strip the interior and sound proofing, a pair of race buckets and harnesses, half cage......

Definately get new shocks and springs! I love my Bilstien B8 shocks and Eibach Pro-Kit springs and they are by far the best mod i've done over everything else. I'm in the process of getting a new rsb too.

I've got a similar car to you and I'm in the process of getting some suspension happening - it was happening through the group buy but after that stopped happening I've been leaning more towards springs and shocks. They'll be more cost effective and more comfy for the price-range I'd be going for. I reckon making it a nice cruiser with some sporty suspension work would be a pretty enjoyable car. You'll spend so much on engine mods and in the end it'd be better just getting a GTI or R32 and probably saving money. Never build something you can buy.
