I'm not sure on that one Clarkee.

But I've been meaning to ask you, did you drive hard for your gearbox to die and need a rebuild?

Na I wasn't driving it hard when the gearbox blew but apparently just putting wider tyres can blow the gearbox..

But it gets driven hard now and no problems at all really.. Just the linkage from the gear stick is a bit loose

I've just got a job at autobarn so I'll see if we can get gaskets in for mk4's

    Word.

What did the gearbox rebuild cost? And re-install costs?

I got the gearbox done at Sydney wide European autos.

If I remember it cost about $4200 for the rebuilt gearbox. It was an exchange unit so the sent me a rebuilt one which I had asked for bolts to be put in the diff instead of pop rivets. I had to send my old gearbox back.

Install cost nearly $1000 all up

    holy sheeeeiiittt!
that's nearly what I paid for the whole car! I've seen a guy advertise on gumtree for rebuilt mk4 1.6 gearboxes for like $1400. I wonder how much to get a 'stronger' one from him?.. now I'm woried about losing mine and being left with a mega bill! hmmmmmmm, back to the gti thoughts again maybe?....

When my gearbox went it was reverse gear that broke a tooth off (quite common apparently) then the tooth went right through the box.
Cost me about $3800 i think.

And mine has no wide wheels and I drive like grand dad.

Craig & Clarkee, what km's did you have the clock when the gearbox failed?

What's the most common thing that fails/breaks the gearbox?
